1 Pearly Yarn
This is a high-class two-fold yarn and used for embroidery and as an effect yarn in fabrics. A " pearly " effect is given by the screw-like twist on the two singles. The singles from 70's to 90's combed yarn are twisted from 40 to 50 turns per inch, and doubled with the twist in the reverse way, about 20 turns per inch. -
2 Button Yarn
A fancy effect yarn much used in America, in which a button or knot is formed by twisting one thread around another at regular intervals. A third or tie thread fixes the button effects. The thread forming the buttons is a hard twist two-fold yarn. A large variety of buttons are made, small, large, long and short. -
3 Boucle Yarn
Has a curled or loop effect and largely used to produce the boucle cloth. These yarns are usually three-fold. May be produced by either of two methods. The yarn may be three-fold, and during doubling, one of the strands is delivered faster than the other two, or a two-fold yarn is prepared and one of the strands is fed at a greater speed to produce the loop, then this doubled yarn is twisted with a single fine thread which binds the loops in position. -
4 Flat Crepe Yarn
A regular flat crepe yarn has a large number of turns per inch, so that when the fabric is finished it will have a real crepe effect. The turns are 50 to 55 per inch and the yarn is generally used 2 picks right-hand, 2 picks left-hand twist. (See French Crepe Yarn.) -
5 Knickerbocker Yarn
A fancy yarn with small spots of bright colour in the form of small knops. The spotting material is flecked on at the carder, and several colours can be used. It is a nub type of yarn spun on the woollen principle. It is used for fancy tweed cloths for sports wear. 6 Coral Yarn
A yarn principally used for making ladies' and children's mittens. It is a light two-fold thread exceedingly hard twisted to give the coral effect. -
7 Spiral Yarn
A fancy yarn made up of two threads twisted tightly together, and round this a soft spun thread is spirally twisted. These several threads may be of different colours or counts. Two threads of different counts twisted together will also give a spiral effect, the greater the difference in thickness the more prominent is the spiral. -

19 Mock Grandrelle Yarns
These are single yarns spun from double roving, one of which is coloured to simulate the effect of a two-fold grandrelle obtained by twisting two threads together. Mock grandrelle being only a single yarn, is not as strong as two-fold of equivalent count, but it is cheaper. 20 Open Band
A worsted yarn twisted from left to right, that is, in the same direction as the diagonal of a letter Z. Cross-band yarn is twisted in the opposite way, in the same direction as the diagonal of a letter S (see crossband yarn) lowered in the sley which places the warp threads alternately closer together and wider apart and this produces a curved effect in the cloth. The reed is the invention of a Burnley maker and can be arranged in various patterns.
